The Norwegian Elkhound is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world — a hardy, silver-grey Nordic spitz with a history in Scandinavia stretching back thousands of years. Skeletal remains of Elkhound-type dogs have been found at Norwegian archaeological sites dating to between 4,000 and 5,000 BC, making the breed one of the most ancient identifiable dog types in Europe. The breed's Norwegian name, Norsk Elghund, translates literally as "Norwegian moose dog" — a direct reference to its primary working role hunting the Scandinavian moose (elk), one of the largest and most formidable game animals in the world. The Elkhound hunts by tracking the moose through dense forest, then holding it at bay by circling, barking, and dodging the animal's hooves until the hunter arrives — a technique requiring extraordinary courage, agility, and stamina. The breed's thick, weather-resistant double coat in distinctive silver-grey with black-tipped guard hairs, its tightly curled tail, and its compact, muscular build are all perfectly adapted to the harsh Norwegian climate. The Norwegian Elkhound is the national dog of Norway and has been recognized by the AKC since 1913. Our collection celebrates this ancient Viking breed with original artwork across 400+ USA-made home décor and gift products.
